More about Roberta Iyamu, PMHNP

Dr. Roberta Iyamu’s interest in mental health started in the very early years of her life, and her search to understand mental illness motivated her to become a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. She believes everyone with a mental health-related condition has a unique story to tell, and their story deserves special attention based on their report. She feels professionally driven to support the mental health community and help overcome obstacles that patients encounter on a day-to-day basis.

Dr. Iyamu’s work and care have a patient-centered style. She believes her patients have a right to know, get involved with, and make decisions about their health. She establishes strong relationships with her patients and their families to help supply them with knowledge and confidence in her care and their treatment plans.

She is pleased to be able to work with non-invasive treatments, such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and esketamine nasal spray, as options for patients who may be treatment-resistant, which psychopharmacology and antidepressants have not provided the relief her patients are seeking. She finds early access to these treatments is the best course. Her inpatient experience made her believe that other alternatives to treatments like TMS, Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and esketamine work. She believes patients should be aware of these options before developing treatment resistance from different medication trials.

Personal Interests

Roberta lives in Sacramento and finds it has many places to visit for fun and many places to learn about and enjoy California history. To her, Sacramento is very suitable for raising a family; it’s a beautiful city with good weather and traffic isn’t bad! Outside of work, she enjoys traveling and loves to see new places locally or long distances.

Education & Experience

Roberta received her Bachelor of Public Health from the University of California, Sacramento.

She graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Simpson University in Redding, California.

She pursued her Master in Clinical Nurse Leadership from the University of San Francisco, where she also eventually graduated with her Doctorate of Mental Health and became a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

Before becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Roberta worked as a psychiatric nurse for many years. She has vast experience working in inpatient and outpatient settings. She also did some emergency room psychiatric care, where she assessed patients in the emergency room for psychiatric crisis stabilization medication and assisted with emergency room mental health patient discharges assessment.

Most recently, she worked as a Psychiatric Registered Nurse at Sutter Health in Sacramento. Here, she spoke with patients and identified what was affecting their mental health as well as administered medications and monitored their effects on the patient. She observed and assessed changes and trends in the mental condition of the patient and planned and implemented therapeutic interventions.
