More about Veronica Kamau, PMHNP
Early in her career as a psychiatric nurse, Veronica was impacted by the lack of access to mental health for patients that she cared for. She witnessed many patients continue to suffer from mental health as they waited for available appointments and saw a lack of access to care. Simultaneously, the life-altering changes that she witnessed after initiation of treatment motivated her to further her career goals, enhance her understanding of psychiatric conditions and treatment modalities, and make lasting impact in her community.
Veronica provides a listening environment where she collaborates with her patients to explore the causes of their distress and, in a nonjudgmental manner, she provides holistic, individualized treatment options. She understands that the decision to seek psychiatric services is a major step and mostly occurs when a patient is vulnerable and unsure of how to move on. She strives to provide a trusting and supportive environment that empowers the patient to make informed decisions about psychiatric treatment.
She believes the patient should be informed of all available treatment options. These include pharmacological and non-pharmacological options such as FDA-approved esketamine nasal spray and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). TMS is an effective, non-invasive, therapeutic option for patients that are unresponsive to medications and psychotherapy.

She provided direct patient care to patients discharging from hospitals to their homes or rehabilitation facilities. She learned how to assess home health needs for the patients and their loved ones. While she felt privileged to take care of the patients, she had a void in my heart knowing that the mental health portion of the patient was not taken care of.
She next served at Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center, a psychiatric hospital in Howard County, Maryland. Here, she mastered the skills of working with young adults, adults, and geriatric patients seeking psychiatric treatment while undergoing competency to stand trial. She provided crisis intervention, administered psychotropic medications, and managed patient care to prevent self-harm and harm to others.
After moving to California, she joined the California Health Care Facility in Stockton, CA, where she continued working with the adult and geriatric populations suffering from mental illness. She provided crisis intervention, administered psychotropic medications, and managed patient care to prevent self-harm and harm to others.
