Lauren Marasa, MD: Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and TMS
Dr. Marasa is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist. Her areas of focus include depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), neurocognitive disorders and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
While she had always been attracted to the fields of science and medicine, growing up she had dreams of working for the FBI. Though eventually learning that it wasn’t quite like what is portrayed on TV, her interest remained. After she finished her chief residency year in general psychiatry, she completed a forensic psychiatry fellowship focused on the intercept between psychiatry and law. In fact, she continues to provide expert witness and testimony in a variety of civil and criminal cases.
Dr. Marasa finds that no two patients are ever the same in psychiatry, and she recognizes and appreciates what makes each person unique. She listens to each patient and assesses his or her symptoms, tailoring the treatment approach uniquely to that person. She makes it a point to understand the biologic and genetic factors, psychological factors and social factors to develop individualized treatment options for each patient. She then uses a collaborative approach to offer the patient various treatment options while discussing the risks, benefits, side effects, and alternatives to each. Ultimately, it is team effort to develop a personalized treatment plan for each patient.
She offers her patients the best psychiatric treatment with a broad range of treatment options. She is especially intrigued by Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), where she can treat her patients with the latest in neuromodulation noninvasively. Although she takes pride in staying up-to-date with latest advances in the field of psychiatry, she believes in the motto, “No one cares what you know until they know that you care.”
She joined Mindful Health Solutions in the Summer of 2019.
John Onate, MD: Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and TMS
Dr. Onate is Board-Certified in Psychiatry and Internal Medicine with deep experience in comprehensive medical care for mental illness, particularly severe mental illness and depression. He has over twenty years of experience treating a wide variety of patients.
Originally a music major in college, Dr. Onate leaned towards pursuing science and biology after his first year. He began to consider medicine as his long-term goal. He felt it could fit with his science acumen and combine that with his broader interests in sociology, anthropology, plus his desire to work directly with people. Once in medical school and residency, he combined psychiatry and internal medicine as the path that best helped him breakdown barriers of physical vs. mental health and enabled him to treat his patients more holistically.
He has continually fought the stigma sometimes associated with mental illness and increased access to treatment throughout his career, as both an educator and a psychiatrist. In treating patients, he adapts his role as a physician to meet their style and work collaboratively with them to help them as best as he can. His background as an educator helps him explain his treatment plans, and ensure the entire person is taken care of and on a thoughtful path towards healing.
Dr. Onate has a strong interest in interventional psychiatry, especially Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). For him, these are both targeted treatments that also give more information on the brain and brain health and can assist with the more severe cases of mental illness and depression. He used ECT for patient treatments during residency and assisted in some of the initial work with TMS as well. He believes they are powerful tools that can aid patients in finding relief and recovery.
He joined Mindful Health Solutions in the late fall of 2020.
Sharath Puttichanda, MD: Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and TMS
Dr. Puttichanda is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist with a focus on depression including young adult-onset depression, anxiety, psychosis, trauma-related issues, and bipolar depression.
He finds the brain to be the most fascinating organ in the body. The human condition, the stories of our lives, and the opportunities he has had to observe, learn and be curious are what drew him to Psychiatry, and the fact that the brain is the seat of all behavior, emotion, and action.
For Dr. Puttichanda, his passion stems from a deep-seated desire to help those in crisis or in need. He believes humans are complicated and not perfect all the time. All of those aspects make the whole person. He uses his clinical skills to guide people in the right direction and build treatment plans to help his patients find relief from the suffering they may be experiencing. In working with patients, he meets them where they are emotionally and builds a collaborative partnership to help each person live their happiest, best lives.
He has witnessed patients treated with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and seen great success and examples of recovery and relief from suffering. He sees TMS as a breakthrough treatment option for those with treatment-resistant mood disorders and anxiety disorders.
He joins Mindful Health Solutions in the late fall of 2020.
Emily Schrodek, PMHNP: Medication Management
Emily is a Board-Certified, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with a focus on treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance use disorders. She has been working to help patients in a variety of mental health disciplines for over thirteen years.
Emily knew she wanted to work in mental health since high school. She has always loved listening and connecting with others, but it took her a few years to figure out her specialty. She initially worked for over eight years in clinical research, with the idea of pursuing a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. After working with veterans at the San Francisco VA Medical Center, she found herself especially drawn to psychiatric nursing. She was able to see how compassionate, holistic care can impact patient health and wanted to provide such care to those in need. She went back to school to specialize in nursing and psychiatry.
She has a strong belief that the patient knows their body the best. When treating patients, she creates a collaborative partnership where the patient is truly the driver, and she is there to help guide and support them. She recognizes that seeking mental health treatment can be a vulnerable act, and she wants to honor and respect that in her treatment. She has a special interest in how the mind-body connection impacts overall health and may use a complementary treatment such as meditation and mindfulness in her practice.
Emily is interested in interventional psychiatry therapies such as Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), esketamine nasal spray, and ketamine infusions to help her patients. She has helped patients in the past with these treatments and has witnessed the incredible impact they have in alleviating a patient’s suffering and helping a patient find relief. She has also seen the promising durability of these treatments, and how they may keep working long after the treatment has ended.
Emily joins Mindful Health Solutions in early 2021.
Rhea Singson-Tapang, PMHNP: Medication Management
Rhea is a psychiatric nurse practitioner with over twenty years of nursing experience in various settings. She has been focused on mental health for the past twelve years, taking care of a variety of psychiatric disorders such as Major Depressive Disorders (MDD), bipolar disorders, and anxiety disorders.
She found her calling for psychiatry in nursing school. One of her courses involved community nursing, and she was simultaneously struck by the need for mental health care and also the stigma that could be associated with a mental illness. She had always been fascinated by how people’s minds work and how they are affected by various factors. Psychiatry allowed her to get to know the patients and help them alleviate their suffering and improve their overall quality of life.
Rhea provides holistic, cross-disciplinary treatment plans, collaborating with any other care team members for the utmost patient care and outcome, and offering emotional support to patients and their families to help her patients reach their treatment goals in a timely manner and make important decisions about their lives. She believes in taking care of her patients holistically and looking at the physical, mental, social, spiritual, and psychological factors that promote wellness.
Having worked with clinics that offered both Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Rhea has witnessed the amazing results these treatments may offer. She has seen TMS change the lives of several of her patients. She believes TMS is a helpful and effective treatment for patients who have tried other forms of depression treatments to no avail. Plus, it is FDA-approved, non-invasive, and has almost no side effects.
Rhea joins Mindful Health Solutions in the spring of 2020.
Ksenia Voronina, MD: Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and TMS
Dr. Voronina is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist with a focus on novel approaches to treatment-resistant depression.
She has always welcomed the more challenging patients, where she considers the pathology, past, psychology and stressors to find the best, most long-lasting treatment possible. Having interest in novel treatments, improvement of brain connectivity and procedural medicine, she values the ability to perform brain stimulation that is very targeted.
As a dynamic provider, Dr. Voronina enjoys forming a more holistic impression of her patients informed by their culture and developmental journey. She is passionate in helping her patients get back on track. Dr. Voronina is a compassionate physician with gentle yet direct style. She understands and validates each person’s experience, enjoying hearing the stories and thinking through their treatment needs.
