“Experiencing a struggle with your memory or judgement can be disorienting and frightening. It may be hard to admit you need assistance. Or maybe you’ve noticed your aging parent begin to decline and your worry can take over. The subtle changes you see may be disheartening, and medications or other remedies may not help.
We have been at the forefront of using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to treat clinical depression. There is increasing evidence that TMS can also be used to treat neurological disorders. Specifically, there is evidence it can slow down the progression of dementia. In our practice, we’ve witnessed great results for patients with memory disorders and have dedicated ourselves to helping slow the progression of cognitive decline.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the prevention and control of neurocognitive disorders as a public health priority. Our program treats individuals with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia. Mild cognitive impairment can be defined as an intermediary stage between normal aging and mild dementia. People who suffer from MCI often noticed memory issues or cognitive challenges but are able to carry on with their daily lives. Individuals who are diagnosed with mild dementia have memory or cognitive issues significant enough to impact their overall function. People diagnosed with MCI carry a significant risk of progressing to mild dementia. TMS may help decrease the risk of progressing from mild cognitive impairment to mild dementia. Similarly, TMS can help slow the progression from mild dementia to advanced dementia.
Our doctors are devoted to helping patients with neurological disorders, and finding innovative, technologically advanced therapies, like TMS, to relieve suffering. Our trusted staff has been trained to take special care with patients who may be struggling and provide comfort throughout any treatment.
Call us for a discussion with our Patient Access Team and they can provide some initial understanding of your symptoms. If you are caring for your loved one, whether it is your parent, partner, family member or dear friend, they will be able answer any questions you may have and schedule an appointment for you into our Neurology Center in Oakland or Union Square office in downtown San Francisco.
You’ll meet with a case manager at your first appointment as well as your practitioner, who will discuss your history and the symptoms you or your loved one is experiencing. They will determine a treatment plan for you.

TMS is an excellent treatment for mild dementia when a person is trying to slow down their memory loss. During treatment, TMS is combined with cognitive exercises. Though TMS has not yet been cleared by the FDA for memory conditions such as Mild Cognitive Decline or Mild Dementia, there is ongoing research internationally that suggests its promise as a treatment for dementia. In fact, in Europe, it is currently approved for the treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia. In our program, we are currently treating patients and are witnessing great results.
TMS is approved by the FDA for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder. There is ongoing research internationally that suggests its promise as a treatment for dementia. TMS may help decrease the risk of progressing from mild cognitive impairment to mild dementia. Similarly, TMS can help slow the progression from mild dementia to advanced dementia. We have now treated patients at our practice and have witnessed great results.
TMS uses magnetic pulses to help modulate the parts of the brain that are dysregulated when a patient is suffering from mild dementia. Our program consists of 25 sessions over a seven-week period. During our program, patients undergo cognitive testing both before and after the treatment course.
During the procedure, patients recline on the TMS chair, while an insulated coil (magnet) is placed over an area of the brain. Magnetic pulses are delivered for 25 minutes while patients are doing cognitive exercises. Each session is observed by a certified technician. Then is evidence that combining the stimulation with cognitive exercises helps to improve the benefit of the treatment.
