More about Robert Wuthenow MSN, PMHNP-BC

Robert Wuthenow, MSN, PMHNP-BC, is a dedicated board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner with more than 15 years of nursing experience in multiple settings. He provides compassionate, holistic care to patients struggling with mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, PTSD, and bipolar disorder. He has had the opportunity to serve many populations across Illinois, North Carolina, and California, including the veterans he has had the privilege to work with in his previous role with the Veterans Health Administration in San Francisco. In his care, Robert seeks to leverage his extensive experience in mental health and nursing care to provide high-quality, evidence-based treatment to individuals with psychiatric disorders. He is committed to improving patient outcomes through a collaborative, patient-centered approach and ongoing professional development.

With comprehensive experience working as an RN in various settings, including mental health and behavioral healthcare, Robert has worked with a diverse population of patients with differing needs. In every setting, Robert has provided care with patients’ needs at the top of mind. In addition to providing care to patients presenting psychotic disorders, Robert has worked in the emergency department, surgery and post-anesthesia care, infusion therapy, as well as traumatic brain injuries and other traumatic injuries and orthopedics.

In his clinical rotations as a Graduate Clinical Intern for the University of North Carolina School of Nursing, Robert gained invaluable hands-on experience in his more than 500 combined hours working at the North Carolina Neuropsychiatry Attention & Memory Centers, Duke University’s Behavioral Health, Outpatient Psychiatry Center, and as a member of the Carolina Outreach Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team.

Most recently, while working as a PMHNP at the San Francisco Veterans Health Administration, Robert has had the opportunity to utilize all his skills in caring for patients’ psychiatric needs. In his rotations there, he has led the PTSD clinical team, administered general psychiatric outpatient services, delivered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp), provided psychiatric emergency services, and worked in multiple substance abuse treatment and PTSD recovery clinics.

Having previous experience administering Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy, Robert was drawn to Mindful Health Solutions for the opportunity to continue to administer this life-changing care option to those suffering from treatment-resistant depression and other conditions.

He appreciates that MHS maintains a patients-first model for compassionate, evidence-based care while also integrating cutting-edge interventions. Robert knows that having access to options like TMS, esketamine, and other advanced therapies allows many patients struggling with depression, anxiety, and the effects of PTSD the opportunity to find real healing.

Education & Experience

Robert earned his initial bachelor’s degree in Environmental Policy & Health at the University of Michigan in June 1994.

Years later, he realized he wanted to make a difference in the medical field by providing care to patients directly. So, he returned to school to complete his second Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

After many years of serving Chicago communities as an RN in emergency departments, ambulatory surgery, and infusion therapy settings, he found a new passion while working at a Brain Innovation Center. There, he delivered comprehensive, person-centered care to patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injuries, many presenting with cognitive impairments, impulsivity, and behavioral dysregulation. It was there, while he was providing ongoing education and emotional support to families coping with their loved one’s recovery, that he realized his interest in psychiatry and the mental health field specifically. He became more fascinated by the inner workings of the mind and the relationship between brain health and behavior, and also felt called to care for individuals and their families struggling with mental health needs.

Soon, he moved to North Carolina to pursue his Master of Science in nursing degree and to complete his requirements for becoming a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. While studying at the University of North Carolina, he worked as a clinical nurse for those presenting with psychotic disorders and later as a nurse providing support in trauma and orthopedics. During his time providing integrated care plans for medically and psychiatrically complex patients, he was recognized for excellence in patient care with multiple nominations for the DAISY Award, reflecting consistent delivery of compassionate, high-quality nursing care.

In the last two years, he has participated in multiple research and quality improvement projects surrounding suicide risk assessments for veterans. He even conducted an independent research project examining the barriers and opportunities associated with implementing universal PTSD screening in U.S. trauma centers. Additionally, he has given multiple presentations on topics surrounding PTSD, Nutritional Psychiatry, Co-occurring ADHD and Bipolar Disorder, and the Importance of accurate diagnosis of bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder.

A lifelong learner, Robert looks forward to continuing to learn and grow at Mindful Health Solutions while collaborating with other experts to serve patients in need.
