More about Dr. Roley

Dr. Jason Roley has deep expertise in treating adults with complex psychiatric needs. Much of his training and career has focused on supporting adult patients who have not improved with standard treatment approaches. He is especially passionate about helping patients who feel stuck, discouraged, or unsure whether meaningful improvement is still possible.

During his academic career and training, Dr. Roley realized that psychiatry is one of the few fields in medicine that asks us to understand the whole person – biology, psychology, relationships, culture, environment, and personal history. He was drawn to this combination of medical rigor and human complexity. He found that practicing psychiatry allowed him to use evidence-based treatments while also paying close attention to a patient’s story, values, and lived experience; a balance that has always felt meaningful to him.

Dr. Roley works collaboratively with his patients to ensure they feel heard, respected, and that their symptoms are taken seriously. He is sensitive to how challenging it can be for patients to seek further treatment after feeling dismissed, misunderstood, or discouraged by prior treatment experiences. His goal is for patients to leave appointments feeling empowered by their own story and reassured that they have established a clear, realistic plan for moving forward.

For his treatment approach, he first seeks to understand what medications and treatments a patient has tried. Together they discuss what helped, what caused side effects or barriers, and what goals patients have for improvement. From there, Dr. Roley builds a comprehensive treatment plan that may include medication management or interventional treatments such as TMS or esketamine.

For those struggling to find the right path for their mental health care, Dr. Roley would like to emphasize that not responding to medications does not make someone a failure, nor does it mean they are out of options.

Personal Interests

Outside of work, Dr. Roley enjoys reading literary and speculative fiction, listening to and playing music, staying active, and exploring new cities on foot. His passion for music started when he was a child, as he grew up playing piano and clarinet. More recently, he has been learning baritone ukulele. Beyond this, he also enjoys travel, bookstores, cafés, and time to be present with family and close friends.

Education & Experience

After developing a strong foundation in the sciences and an early appreciation for mentorship, service, and community during his undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley, Roley went on to earn his medical degree at Drexel University College of Medicine.

Following his educational experiences, Roley completed an adult psychiatry residency at San Mateo County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services, where he trained in a public-sector system caring for patients with complex psychiatric and social needs. Later, he completed fellowship training in Addiction Psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco/ San Francisco VA, which deepened his interest in treating co-occurring mood, anxiety, trauma, and substance-use disorders.

Dr. Roley’s career has centered on adult psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and community-based mental health care. He has had experience working in county and county-contracted systems, including high-acuity outpatient programs, AOT/ACT-style team-based care, and medical leadership roles focused on medication continuity, documentation quality, clinical workflows, and safe psychiatric care. These experiences shaped the way he practices, and today he combines careful diagnostic thinking, practical treatment planning, and a deep respect for how difficult it can be for patients to keep trying after multiple setbacks.
