Richard Bermudes, MD: Esketamine, Medication Management, TMS and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
Dr. Bermudes is Board Certified in Adult Psychiatry and Family Medicine, with 20 years’ experience caring for patients. He founded Mindful Health Solutions in 2007, serves as the practice’s Medical Director, and is an expert on TMS practice organization and policy development. With his background as a professor and researcher, he leads the practice in its mission to educate the public and clinicians on both mental health issues and TMS, to continually seek the most advanced treatments, and to actively contribute to the medical community’s knowledge of mental health conditions and therapy efficacy.
He recently wrote and edited “Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: Clinical Applications for Psychiatric Practice”, a book with key research findings on TMS as well as its potential to be used for other conditions such as OCD, PTSD, Adolescent Depression and mild dementia. He is experienced in treating patients with MDD (Major Depressive Disorder), including Unipolar Depression.
Dr. Bermudes is a caring, collaborative practitioner with a structured, goal-oriented approach to treating mental health conditions. His treatment plans may include TMS, medication management or cognitive therapy.
Jason Garner, MD: Esketamine, Medication Management and TMS
Dr. Garner is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist who is focused on helping patients with mood disorders, anxiety, and personality disorders. He enjoys working with diverse populations including those in the LGBTQ+ community and patients with chronic medical illnesses.
Originally pursuing a career in law, Dr. Garner eventually switched paths and went back to school to become a doctor. He has always been interested in psychology and helping others. He had grown up with a relative with severe mental illness, which shaped this desire and instilled in him compassion for those with mental illness as well as providing him with an early, informal training.
His working style with patients involves truly trying to understand their world and work alongside them, working in a collaborative relationship to assist them in meeting their goals. He helps them get out of their sometimes entrenched way of thinking as he builds a treatment plan that fits with their lifestyle and supports their recovery.
Dr. Garner has always enjoyed learning about the brain. For him, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) allows another access point to healing for those suffering from mental illness. It is an additional mode of treatment to assist patients, outside the usual modes of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy and can make a difference in helping a patient find relief.
He joined Mindful Health Solutions in the late summer of 2019.
Karl Lanocha, MD: Esketamine, Medication Management and TMS
Dr. Lanocha is a neuropsychiatrist, Board Certified in Adult Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine, with over 30 years’ experience caring for patients with treatment-resistant depression. Among the first physicians in the country to offer outpatient TMS therapy, he has become a nationally recognized expert in the field and serves as the Head of TMS Education. Dr. Lanocha has lectured widely about TMS, taught professional seminars, provided hands-on training to clinicians, and coauthored several pioneering papers on the therapy’s clinical application and long-term benefits.
Following his interest in the humanities and medicine, Dr. Lanocha pursued a career in psychiatry as a way to connect with patients, develop a deep understanding of their stories, and find the most advanced, evidence-based therapies to relieve symptoms and achieve wellness.
Seeking assistance for a mental health condition can be a difficult step, and Dr. Lanocha believes it’s critical that each patient feel understood and supported in their journey to wellness. He strives to understand each person’s specific symptoms, circumstances, and body chemistry, including possible contributing factors such as sleep apnea. He develops a holistic treatment plan tailored to each patient’s needs, incorporating a broad range of evidence-based treatments including TMS, mindfulness-based techniques, and sleep therapies. When the fog of depression begins to lift, he works with the patient to correct distorted thinking and help them reconnect to their resilience, joy, and sense of purpose.
Keith Lui, MD: Esketamine, Medication Management and TMS
Dr. Lui is an Adult Psychiatrist who has a clinical focus on depression and mood disorders.
In undergraduate, Dr. Lui anticipated pursuing a career in business. With a Neurologist father, he wasn’t sure he wanted to go into medicine. Yet volunteering in an emergency room during college changed his course. He was struck by the immediate connection he felt to patient care. He saw the comfort and reassurance doctors provided for patients, and how this difference directly impacted the patients’ disposition. After this experience, he knew healthcare was his calling, and he pivoted towards a calling to medicine.
Most recently, Dr. Lui treated patients at a county mental health center. As the Crisis Unit Psychiatrist, he managed and diagnosed a wide variety of psychiatric illnesses. He implemented pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment of hospitalized patients. He worked with patients to create the best treatment plan possible, empowering them to take an active ownership in their care, as this doctor/patient partnership had a significant impact on aiding patients’ improvement.
Dr. Lui first has always been interested in Interventional Psychiatry and the opportunity to treat patients with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS.) Having treated patients with pharmacologic plans, he saw it was sometimes difficult to find the appropriate medication regiment for patients, and even when found, patients could relapse or worsen. He saw TMS as a safe treatment with limited side effects that can create lasting improvement for patients. He also appreciates the assuagement for some cultures that may be more comfortable with procedure vs. pills.
He joined Mindful Health Solutions in Late Summer of 2019.
Kevin Rosi, MD: Esketamine, Medication Management and TMS
Dr. Kevin Rosi is Board Certified in Adult Psychiatry and specializes in child and adolescent care, early onset Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, and eating and developmental disorders. He also has extensive experience in treating behavioral disorders, such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder, as well as impulse control and psychotic disorders.
Dr. Rosi was inspired to become a physician after witnessing the birth of his younger sister; he was deeply impressed by the role doctors played in physically and mentally assisting people through some of their toughest and most profound moments. During his medical school rotations, he found that the ongoing nature of the psychiatrist-patient relationship enabled him to develop a more complete understanding of his patients and was heartened that this work helped them to transform their lives.
Dr. Rosi believes in building a trusting working relationship with his patients thorough open communication and educating them about all available modalities so treatment decisions can be made collaboratively. Using a holistic approach that emphasizes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments, including psychotherapy, neuromodulation, and developing healthy living habits, Dr. Rosi works together with his patients toward the goals of symptom elimination and restoring health. Currently, he is seeing patients ages 14 and older.
Rhea Singson-Tapang, PMHNP: Medication Management
Rhea is a psychiatric nurse practitioner with over twenty years of nursing experience in various settings. She has been focused on mental health for the past twelve years, taking care of a variety of psychiatric disorders such as Major Depressive Disorders (MDD), bipolar disorders, and anxiety disorders.
She found her calling for psychiatry in nursing school. One of her courses involved community nursing, and she was simultaneously struck by the need for mental health care and also the stigma that could be associated with a mental illness. She had always been fascinated by how people’s minds work and how they are affected by various factors. Psychiatry allowed her to get to know the patients and help them alleviate their suffering and improve their overall quality of life.
Rhea provides holistic, cross-disciplinary treatment plans, collaborating with any other care team members for the utmost patient care and outcome, and offering emotional support to patients and their families to help her patients reach their treatment goals in a timely manner and make important decisions about their lives. She believes in taking care of her patients holistically and looking at the physical, mental, social, spiritual, and psychological factors that promote wellness.
Having worked with clinics that offered both Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Rhea has witnessed the amazing results these treatments may offer. She has seen TMS change the lives of several of her patients. She believes TMS is a helpful and effective treatment for patients who have tried other forms of depression treatments to no avail. Plus, it is FDA-approved, non-invasive, and has almost no side effects.
Rhea joins Mindful Health Solutions in the spring of 2020.
