Seeking mental health treatment does not mean that you are “crazy” or “flawed” as our society’s unfortunate stigma might suggest. Many people who seek psychotherapy are those who experience normal, everyday problems. Therapy is right for you if you are looking to relieve mental distress, learn coping skills, and further your personal growth.

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy (also referred to as “talk therapy” or just “therapy”) is a form of mental health treatment that is targeted toward relieving emotional distress and mental health difficulties. It can also be focused on learning skills to help us cope with difficult situations and help us to improve our social outcomes. Therapy is a confidential, safe, and non-judgmental place to process emotions and thoughts, gain insight and new skills, and focus on personal change and growth.

What many people don’t often realize is that mental illness and physical illness are part of the same human body. Sometimes people experience physical pain and/or discomfort when going through emotional challenges. This is part of the human experience, and mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. At the end of the day, seeking help indicates emotional maturity and the courage to change one’s personal situation.

What is difference between a psychiatrist or PMHNP and a psychotherapist?

Therapists may have titles such as Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). These are people who completed a graduate program in social work (Master of Social Work), marriage and family therapy (Master of Science in Psychology), or counseling (Master of Science in Counseling).

Licensed masters-level therapists are able to assess, diagnose, and treat mental illness. They are able to provide psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy. However, they are not able to prescribe medications, unlike psychiatrists or PMHNPs.
