Anxiety can be stressful, overwhelming, and hard to manage, yet it is one of the most common mental health conditions. While anxiety is perfectly normal and can help us to survive, an anxiety disorder involves more than just brief or temporary worry or fear. People living with an anxiety disorder often notice that the anxiety does not go away and that it can even become worse over time.
Anxiety can present itself in both psychological ways, such as being excessively worried or having feelings of fear or dread. However, anxiety can also manifest into physical symptoms, including (but certainly not limited to) elevated heart rate, shakiness or jitteriness, gastrointestinal issues, headaches, muscle tension, trouble falling and/or staying asleep, restlessness, and fatigue.
It is important to know that anxiety is treatable. Typical treatment plans for anxiety include psychotherapy and medication. Behavioral and lifestyle modifications, such as adjusting your diet and exercise habits, meditating, or journaling, can help people find relief. However, because mental health care isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, treatments vary from person to person.
